How does one lift the mast and hold it in place and attach the forestay alone? Is there a peice of equipment I can purchase? Thanks in advance. Nicole Cyber_Nixster@hotmail.com

mast raising

run a halyard thru a block attached at the bow. Run this line back to your mast and winch the mast up to raise it. Cleat the line at the mast to secure it. Now attach your forestay at the bow and you're all set. tune the mast and go sailing.

Some manufactures have mast raising systems for their boats , there is an abundance of info in the archives , some of us have come up with our own solutions, a lot depends on the boat, good luck , Mike B

raising the mast

The easiest way, assuming that you don't need any extra leverage in the raising part, is to attach the jib halyard to the bow prior to raising the mast. Raise the mast into position, snug the halyard and cleat it, then you can go up to the bow to attach the stay. You may need to get a slightly longer halyard (or attach an extension rope) to do this.

Nic, You did not say what size or brand of boat

you have, but if it is a deck stepped mast such as the Hunter 26, then it is raised with the main sheet and tackle. You really need to use a gin pole close to the mast base or the leaverage strain could be so great that a very dangerous failure could occur. With a gin pole and some temporary short mast raising shrouds the process takes about 5 minutes to raise and is very secure while you attach the forestay. Let us know what type and size boat and I'm sure you will find a safe and sure way to raise your mast. Ray S/V Speedy
