My '93 hunter 23.5 has two 1/2" holes on either side of the mast approx 4 1/2 feet up from the base, and slightly aft of the port/starboard centerline of the mast. They have a stainless frame and appear to be part of the original design. What are these for?

mast raising bridle wires

arturo, you should have 2 mast raising bridle wires with your boat. each is about 5' long SS wire with a J-hook on one end and a pelican hood on the other. these are temporarily attached between the holes on your mast and the rear lifeline stanchion to keep the mast center while raising and lowering. for sailing they are removed. without them, while raising and lowering, you stand the risk of having the mast swing to port or starboard and ripping the mast step out of the deck. definitely try to locate them. they are necessary, not nice to have. check the raising/lowering procedure in the manual (see link for 240) and you'll get a better idea how they're used. good luck, ed
