Mast hole for gin pole - failure prone?

It seems several models of 23 - 26 foot Hunters had a 1" mounting hole for the gin pole in the base of the mast. I want to know if people have had mast problems from using this system. I am rerigging an O'day 222 and I had US Spars make a mast raising pole and they used the system with a stainless steel pole with a birds mouth notch on one end and two eyes on the other. (photos attached). It works fine. I tension the jib halyard so the gin pole stays at a right angle to the mast and I have stabilized against mast side sway with two mast raising stays.

I did not want a large hole in the mast but wanted a U-shaped yoke welded to the end of the gin pole that fit over the mast and secured with a bolt. They riveted another mast section over the mast to reinforce the hole, but I am still concerned with the hole "wallowing out" or leading to cracks and mast failure. It also seems like asking for corrosion problems in salt water sailing to have stainless steel rivets in the aluminum spar down where salt water will always splash.

What problems have people had with this system and are the problems common?

My hunter 26 has the same set up. So far no problems.

Thanks so much. That's what I like to hear. I saw one previous poster who had a split in the mast at the hole that was welded and then failed again at the weld. So I was worried.

I did have to replace the pole and foot on mine but the failure was a baby stay as the mast was half-way up. If you ever need an inexpensive way to make a new pole... I've pics of how I did mine.

HI Dave,

I've seen a bunch of your posts, so thanks for helping. East coast Florida. Tomorrow Saturday any time before 10 pm. Sun same - actually I'm retired so any day same story! Like I said it work's fine just concerned about long term consequences and making it more robust.

Cheers,
Kevin

Thanks r granger

My baby (mast raising) stays are 8 feet up the mast. My only complaint is that the jib tack hangs up as it passes the new stay

Cheers,
Kevin

Cabinet catch for many Hunters

These catches were common on Hunters from the Legend-era through today's Marlow-Hunters. We keep a large stock on hand for emergency shipments or just getting spares.
