Reading various specs on the O'Day 25 and 23, I noticed that the mast clearance height is listed as 31 feet for the '25 and 32 feet for the '23 I have a '23 and can just get under a railroad bridge going out of my marina. I would like to move up to a '25, but always thought that the mast clearance would be a problem. The '25 carries 50 feet of additional sail, so it is hard to believe that the mast heightis a foot less than the '23. Thanks for your help.

32' clearence is close your eyes time

Bob, the CB version is suppose to make it through at 32'. I really don't feel comfortable with less than 34'. If I upset the bridgetender so be it: it's not his head the damn thing is going to land on. The extra sail area comes from a little more J and E length. PM

What's on your mast?

As I recall, the 31 foot mast hight AWL on the O'Day 25 is just to the top of the masthead. Taking a quick look around the marina you should be able to see how many people put things on top of the mast, such as VHF antennas and windvanes. If you are buying a boat without anything on top, you probably will want to add stuff later. The masthead is probably the best place to put the VHF antenna because VHF communications are line-of-sight and a higher antenna will get you a greater range. Also, a windvane on top of the mast is useful in keeping track of wind direction and can be used by autopilots to maintain a given course relative to the wind. So you might want to find another marina if that is a possibility.

Mast Clearance

I'm at work right now so i can't verify height above water. I know the centerboard model has a 29' mast and the fixed keel model has a 31' mast. When I do get home, I'll see if i have the height above water. I want to say that height is 32' and 34' respectively. Let you know for sure later. Russ

Specs

The literature says C/B 33'8 and Keel 35'8. Plus of course all the crap we put up there - VHF antenna, Windex, windspeed spinner and anchor light. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
