I sail a Oday Mariner 2+2 and I'm looking for a mast head running and anchor light that is easy on the budget. Everthing I have found so far doesn't really go on the mast in a easy way. I trailer the boat everwhere and would like something that goes on and off without to much trouble. I'm also looking for a simple elctric box to run my two batts. and solor charger through. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks RKH

Have you tried Battery power LED

What you need to find is small dome LED light. I had a friend that just ran a battery powered LED light up the mast for mast head running and anchor light. That way there no wire to mess with or costly light to break when you drop the mast. Just add a small pulley on side of the mast and put a loop line to a cleat. I don't have any fixed lighting on my Mariner. I have thought about it, but found it best to keep it simple. I have battey powered running lights to use at night. I only out late couple time a year so they work great. Les

scotty portable anchor light

might be what you want. It's a portable light that goes up on a halyard. It has a photovalic (sp??) sensor so it comes on in the dark. A few batteries kept mine running when I wanted it to all season. I already had a steaming light but didn't have an anchor light. mike C.

Thanks for the call back. Does your steaming light mount on the mast. I do like to sail at night what you use may work for me. where did you get it from? I'm having a hard time finding a masthead steaming or anchor light

more on lights

you can get a pretty inexpensive masthead/steaming light form BoatUS or West Marine (paper and online catalogs) they go for about $25-$30 but you'll have to lower the mast and run wireing down the mast to a battery. The Scotty portable light I got for a birthday gift but if you search for Scotty Portable Anchor light it will take you to their site. You can find dealers there. It hink it was about $50 but very convienent ( I use it as an anchor light while I'm asleep.) if you are sailing, boats under 26ft. do not need a masthead/anchor light on. Just running lights (red/green on bow and white on the stern). Under power you have to have the steaming light on. The steaming light does not substitute for an anchor light as an anchor light has to be seen 360 degrees while a mast mounted steaming light is usually about 270 degrees. The scotty anchor light is 360 degrees ( but if you plan on using it while under sail the sails will cover it at times.) Best of luck

No lights yet

maestro Tell me this can I run on a mast head light alone or do I have to have deck level running lights? I do not have any running lights at this time and think a mast head light would be out of the way and you can always see it. If I put a deck light on the bow it would be covered by the jib half the time. I trailer the boat so getting to the top of the mast is no problem. Rodger 79 Mariner

double check but....

I believe that if you put a tri colored light (red, green, white) at the top of your mast then that is all that is required. This is not however a steaming light (270 degree white light at the spreaders)to be used under power or an anchor light(360 degree white light at top of mast) for anchoring at night.

Well it looks like I'll go with the combo tri color, 360 degree white, As for a steeming light I'll just use the same tri color, for the kind of places I go and as little as I use the motor ( I really learned how to sail in the Navy, I cann't say here what they say about motors on sail boats ) I like to leave and come back to the dock under sail when ever I can, it looks so much cooler! If any one out there knows of a good place to get a mast head light please feel free to chime in.
