Hello, I need help in getting a replacement mast as the boat I have came without one. I know that a C22 mast is 25ft long. 1. I do not know the height of the place on the mast from which the stays fan out- does someone know that height? 2. I noticed that the mast sits on top of the deck-- I wonder how safe is that location for a mast? Shouldn't it go deeper into the cabin and rest on the hull? A previous owner lost the mast probably because of the lack of stay(s). 3. What is the cross cut of the C22 mast? Is the mast tapered or straight? I have access to a 30ft mast that is straight (oval 4"x6") and to a 20ft mast (cheaper). Should I consider shortening the taller one or extend the shorter one? The shorter one is inexpensive. 4. Or maybe someone has experience with a home made wooden mast? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated Mike

Mast

Mike I have a Catalina 22 #81 (1970) I have the Oval Mast. My spreaders are located very close to half way up the mast 12.5 ft. The mast sitting on top of the Dog House seems Ok I have had no problems with that type of setup. Just make sure that the shroud tention are set to the correct specification. (A 50 lb. push should deflect the upper shroud about 1" at shoulder height.) this is from the Catalina Owner's Manual for 1987. My Mast is about 31/4"X 5" Oval shaped. Straight to the top. I would use the longer mast and cut it down as I would think that you would not want a weak spot in the extended Mast. You can go to http://www.catalina22.org/manuals/mnl87/handbook.htm ,this will give you a good working information on the Catalina 22. The book is 35 pages of information and drawings. I hope that this will help you some. I have not heard of any wood masts for a catalina 22. Fair Winds AL

Replacement Mast

Hello Al, Great info and very helpful. It means that 'my mast' would be only 1" larger in the longer direction of a crosscut oval which I think is not much of a problem, if so it will make the mast a little stronger :) The info in the link provided will keep me busy for some time. As you may have guessed, it is a new boat to me and I am just thrilled with it! The standing rigging - does it have to be stainless or can it be regular steel rope? I am asking because in the old days they did not have stainless stell and sailed quite well. You're right that shorter mst is also a very flimsy one and it would take a lot of engineering to make it work. Mike

How long are the spreaders on C22

Al, Can you measure or guestimate how long is each of the spreaders? Also, is a C22 capable of sailing from CA to HI? Mike ANother question is about an outboard, I have a 2HP Johnson outboard, the height seems to be right. Is 2HP going to move the C22 or is it not practical? Mike

Below is the link to Catalina Direct. This is not the Catalina factory. They know a lot about the 22's. You might also check out Dwyer Mast. They might have exactly what you need. Give em a call. Concratulations on your new boat. Have fun! Dan

spreaders

Hi Mike I'm not sure of the length, but I do know the the lower half of the upper shrouds are vertical. If you measure the distance from the mast step to a plum line that is over the center of the middle deck eye, that is mounted on the deck, I believe that you would have the length of the spreader. This is about 29 to 36 inches. be sure that the lower section of the upper shroud is vertical. The 2 hp motor is a little too small for a Catalina 22. I have a tohatsu 6 on my boat. I have used a 3 hp in the past and I had a lot of problems with current and wind when comming into berths. Most people use a 5 hp and above to the max of 9.9hp. No I don't believe that the Catalina would make it to HI. A lot of work would be needed to make it safe for the open sea. Stainless steel cable is the only thing to use for the shrouds and the fore and aft stays. You can't go too inexpensively on shrouds as the shrouds help to hold the mast on the boat. Ref. the steped mast on the dog house. Fair winds AL
