I am repairing my 1987 Hunter 37 Legend after Katrina. It is necessary to replace the mast. The original mast was made by Isospar now Charleston Spars and it was tapered. I have received quotes from both Charleston Spars and U.S. Spars. The US Spars quote is about $4500 cheaper. It is not a tapered mast however. The Charleston Spars mast is more like the original. Question, what function does the taper perform and will the boat performance suffer without the taper? I understand that US Spars is now making Hunters masts and these are without a taper. Of course the boats are vastly different now. If anyone has any info on this or has replaced a mast on a 1987 Hunter 37 Legend I apreciate your comments.

John: I would think that there will be more weight aloft if you have a non-tapered spar! Have you checked with Rig-rite to see if they can supply the OEM parts?
