Mast Foot Riveting Question

I am repairing the split in my mast by the gin pole hole. I have removed the mast foot plate and am about to rivet the inner and outer sleaves to strengthen the mast. My question:
Are the four posts inside the foot a part of the foot or just remnants from old rivets? See picture.

Those are just remnants of the old pop rivets. knock em out with a small punch, from the outside.

suggest using the larger aluminum rivets. I forgot which automotive supply years ago but found the larger rivet guns much cheaper than elsewhere.
