MAST FITTING

HI ALL !!YES YOU CAN TELL IM A NEWBIE !!FOUND A SMALL FITTING ON THE MAST GROVEWHERE THE MAIN SAIL SLIDES IN. IT ALSOSLIDES INTO THIS GROVE AND HAS A SMALLKNURLED KNOB TO SECURE IT AT ANY HEIGHT.WHAT IS THIS FOR ??? MAYBE A STOP FOR THE MAIN HALYARD WHEN THE MAIN IS FURLED???BEST REGARDS:JOHN SAINDON

Two possibilities

1. If your main has sail slides, it can be used to keep the slides from falling out of the slot when the main is lowered.2. If your main uses a bolt rope instead of slides, but has a boom that rides up and down in the slot, it can be used to keep the boom at a set height above the deck. That way when you slack your halyard, your boom doesn't drop to the deck. This is what I used a similar fitting for on a Santana 21 I used to own.
