Mast creaking Oday 20

I have a 76 ODay 20 that I bought this year as my first sailboat. I notice that when I am in a port tack, the mast makes a creaking noise like it is loose. It doesnt make the sound during a starboard tack. Can it be the rigging out of wack or should I be looking for something else. Thanks for any help

I would suggest you inspect the standing rigging, especially where the chain plates from the port and starboard shrouds are bolted through the hull. This is often an area where leakage can cause damage to the bulkhead, which could account for the sound you are hearing. Best case, your rigging needs adjustment. Worst case, you might need to replace the bulkhead. This is only one thing to rule out, I'm sure others will have additional suggestions.
