Were getting ready to trailer our Catalina 22 from Chicago to Florida and was wandering if anybody has any suggestions on securing the mast to the boat?

I also had a support in the middle. It keeps the mast from getting a bend when on its side for so long. the middle support was a 4x4 that was cut ti fit right in the mast step and had a u-shape cut in the top. it was tall enough to keep the mast straight when it was sitting in the forward and aft supports.

My solution

I made a neat mast crutch which stays on the transom for transportation. It's on my own website. www<dot>hastie<dot>org<dot>uk Click on BOATS

Wow thanks everybody for the great advice. It is very much appeciated. In addition I'm planning on leaving the spreaders on and tying the whole thing down with a lot of line for the trip. Anyone see any problems with that? Thanks again for the fantastic responses.

Spreaders

The only thing I would say is I found the spreaders had been rubbing on the aft wall of the cabin. Made a grubby mark which didn't clean up too well. I will protect them with foam next time.

Hell of a storm

Tie everything down as though you're going into a big storm. If something is going to happen, it will during the worst traffic and worst conditions of the whole trip. The center tie down on the mast is very good, bend of the mast is no problem because under sail it will straighten its self but, a bouncing mast will loosen many things attached.

Tie Down Crutch Too

If you are traveling with the mast attached to a crutch on the transom, be sure to tie the mast so that the crutch is held down well. My crutch's pintels slip down through the rudder gudgeons and once on a state highway under construction, they bounced up and out. This allowed the mast to slip cockeyed. I saw it quickly but had to drive a couple of miles before I could stop to fix it as we were in an escorted travel zone at the time. Since then I am careful to tie the crutch down as well as the mast to the crutch. Also be sure to start your trip with good, well greased wheel bearings and good tires, a solid trailer hitch and good trailer lights. Dick K.
