I recently came across a two piece spliced mast on an older 37' boat. Did anyone ever make regular use of these, or is it more likely to be a repair/replacement (broken down for shipping)? It looked ok from the deck (rows of countersunk fasteners extending beyond the joint), but no idea what's inside. How would a surveyor possibly assess the strength of such a thing?

Just an idea

But, if it looks professionally done, it oculd have come that way? If done professionally, the splice is probably the strongest part of your mast!

Pretty Common

I think a lot of OEM spars are now spliced. I assume that it saves a huge shipping percentage, and that the manufacturer does the splice, but I am only speculating. I would agree with Brian that it is probably stronger than the rest of the extrusion. RD

Have one of these

I think these are fairly common. The mast on the S37 is made that way, direct from the factory. Never been any problem, and like others have stated, if done properly probably stronger then the rest of the extrusion.

Our boat

Years ago many high end spars, mostly racing, were sourced from Europe and they were shipped here in two pieces then assembled here. Our CS-36 has a two piece tapered Proctor spar, cutting edge for 1979, which is not surprising seeing as the designer Raymond Wall was Camper Nicholson's lead designer in Europe for many years. Not all splices are from a repair and it's more likely the boat has a foreign extruded spar that needed to be shipped..

Disadvantages ...

If your mast is supposed to bend, it may have a flatness in the curve at the splice that is not supposed to be there. I suspect that 2-piece masts were primarily used with masthead rigs where mast bend is not assumed. I know that in windsurfing rigs, a 2-piece mast is a compromise in performance because of the flat spot in the bend.

If your rig is supposed to bend, the splice can cause a flat spot that is not supposed to be there and it could be a performance compromise. I think that it would be far less a factor with a masthead rig where mast bend is not assumed. I know that windsurfing rigs compromise performance with a 2-piece mast where the bend is critical.

Masthead

It's a masthead rig. I forgot to mention that. It's on a '79 Tartan 37. That one doesn't have an adjustable backstay, though I've seen some that did. The guy I was with thought it was probably a Kenyon spar, but we didn't verify it.

Mine is also a masthead rig, and the joint, or splice, is about 6' below the spreaders. No adjustable backstay. As I have no interest whatsoever in racing a sailboat, certainly no need for me to ever worry about bending the mast back to get another 1/10 knot.
