Happy Easter:) I have a 1988 Oday 272. I’m going to replace the roller furling as the one on the boat now is not working. (doesn’t turn smoothly and the aluminum brackets that go over the forestay are missing parts and don’t line up) It is an old CDI model. I have not done this before and was hoping for some insight and some answers to these questions. Is the Harken MKIV Unit 0 a good choice? Any other suggestions, that won’t break the bank? Do I need to drop the mast to install this? Will the mast coming crashing down when I remove the forestay? I guess just any advice on installing this would be helpful. On a somewhat related note I’m thinking I might drop the mast anyway when I launch this year to avoid some bridges. What is a good procedure for dropping and securing the mast? How do I get the mast raised again? How many people should I have helping me when I try this? Thanks for your help on this and, thanks for this site, it has helped reading some of the other questions people have posted here. Patrick

I am replacing mine with a new CDI FF4 flexible furler on my 272. They are a good furler at a resonable price. You can install it with the mast up but you need to tie off the mast with a halyard before you release the forestay. It would be better to drop the mast if you are planning to do that anyway. We drop our masts at our club all the time. I use a gin pole made of 4 inch PVC pipe. Others have aluminum. Use a halyard to the gin pole which is set 90 degrees to the mast and use a block and tackle(boom vang or main sheet-4 to one would be best). Unhook the forestay when your halyard and block and tackle are set. The first time you will want at least 4 people to help keep the mast straight, keep stays clear etc. Lower and raise slowly and stop by cleating off if you run into problems. KEEP the mast STRAIGHT side to side! This is a must. My wife and I have done it our selves but that is with a lot of practice.I would prefer to have more help. It is done similar to the link shown.
