You folks have probably talked about this subject before but If I could pick your brains one more time. I have purchased a 28.5 and will have to tune the rigging and step the mast after arrival. The club has a manual crane with a winch capacity of 1200lbs which should be adequate. Any tips, especially on reattachment of the stays, tuning rigging etc.would be appreciated. I am especially concerned about how tight those bolts which hold the stays on, should. Any need for a torque wrench? Thanks in advance

Reference Library

Congrats on your new boat. The info is available on this site. The most important thing to recognize is that a large part of the tuning of this rig is done while the mast is on the ground. Go to the big tabs on top of the home Page labeled MORE FUN. Go to reference library and you will find the directions on tuning the B&R rig. You will need a long tape measure. This is also a good time to check out the steaming and anchor lights as well the instruments at the top. Make sure you have spreader boots for both the top and bottom spreader. Get the kind that sew on for the bottom since there are so many shrouds going thru there. Good sailing.

Mast & rigging

If you look at your turnbucle screws and notice and measure the amount of thread on port & stbd. side and repeat this when you lift the mast you will be back to normal. The mast B & R rig requires 1 per/cent bend about 3 1/2 inches from bottom of mast to top a plumb line along back of mast and measure in centre. If you have furling dedicate someone to look after it. And the crane operator to watch top of mast. TAKE YOUR TIME ! I hurried once very expensive. I have the lift line to the front of the mast and the crane boom about 2 ft. ahead and tied off so it doesn't swing. You have to tie off above the first spreader about half way up the mast to lift and balance the mast.( I use a small ladder to get above spreader and to make loop ) tie off at the cleat at the bottom of the mast.Bowline is best make sure all is connected right. All the best!
