Maryland registration numbers on Bow?

I just got a used boat that I've registered in Maryland but previously was Coast Guard documented. There were no numbers on the bow. I've noticed that some boats at my marina have numbers on the Bow but others don't. Some just have the annual sticker on the mast. Anyone know what the rules are in Maryland? Thanks, Steph

for your boat.... I don't know anything about Maryland, but I know how to google. Boat registration is handled by the DMV, like Ca, and I'm going to assume display instructions will accompany the new tags. If your boat is federal documented you do not have to have the numbers on the hull. Go buy the numbes and get sticking!

One or the other

You have two choices: either 1) to go federally documented (USCG numbers on hull on the interior)with a MD registration (but no numbers displayed) OR 2) go through the USCG to un-document the vessel and go to MD DNR (dept of natural resources) to get and/or display MD registration numbers on the bow. In either case you need to follow the USCG and MD rules. See their websites for more info on how to comply.

I think I have it now... If a vessel is documented with CG then there are no numbers but if only registered, then you need the decal and the numbers on the hull. thanks

Steph, like you I bought

a previously documented boat. Since I had to register with the State anyway and it was less trouble than transferring the documentation I let the documentation go and just keep the boat registered here.edit to add: The registration papers include details on placement of the numbers and sticker. The sticker is good for two years and the number doesn't change as long as you own the boat.

MD Numbers

Maryland requires all boats to be registered with the State DNR, but does not require numbers on boats that are documented. In my experience, the boats you see with only the sticker are documented boats. If you look closely, you will see that the logo on the two are different.You may want to check with MD DNR to confirm. I have always found them helpful.

"I let the documentation go and just keep the boat registered here."If that is the literal truth then the USCG still thinks the previous owner has the boat. someone with an ownership interest (you or the previous owner) needs to contact the USCG and tell them to remove the boat from documentation.Otherwise when you go to sell the boat and the person buying it form you trys to get a loan for the boat a USCG abstract of documentation search will reveal someone other than you to be the owner of record.

The title trail will go something like this; 1984 owner traded the boat for a newer larger boat. Marina took possesion. 1988 Ist marina was sold to a second marina the boat went with the sale.1989 Novenber I purchased the boat from the second marina. I registered the title with Maryland Dept Natural Resources in early 1990. From 1990 to 1999 I rebuilt and refitted the entire boat Paid the registration fee and got the hull numbers and registration sticker. Since I am only 67 years of age I won't be selling in the foreseeable future. By then I expect all previous owners will be dead and I will probably give it to someone I like.
