Martec folding props have a small cotter pin that goes through the hub and nut. I believe they are Monel. But I don’t have one - what can be used in its place? I have some thick copper wire, was looking for a stainless nail but they’re all zinc…

I think that a stainless steel cotter would work just fine. Check stock at a hardware or boat supply with a magnet for little or no attraction.

That may work. Just two observations:

1) Stainless is not actually rated for submersed applications - although we do it a lot. Monel is rated for submersed application.
2) The magnet test may not be very reliable. All my 316 cotter pins are down on my boat and it's far away, or I'd go check to see how magnetic they are or not. They may well have quite a bit of cold work during fabrication which would induce magnetism, but I'd have to check.

Monel is certainly a much better material for this specific application. But as you say, 316 may work well enough...
