Hey gang, Question for ya. I just got a 2 bladed folder from Martec to replace my fixed pitch sea anchor. I have a simple question. Can the prop be installed with the boat in the water? I went through the archives and couldnt find an specific answer to that ? My diver (yes we have those in San Diego) has pulled my two blader off before no sweat. Any thoughts? Cheers Rick H336

If the diver can remove and reinstall

one propeller. Then logic would say that this same person could remove one and install another. Now it will also depend on this diver not getting them mixed up and putting the old one back on .

Not my Maxprop

I don't know how complex a Martec is but I have an old style Maxprop and I doubt a team of navy seals could do it under water - it's a 2 man job on the hard. I also assume you paid a fair amount for it and I would want to see the final instal to ensure it was done right. The other benefit is you can change your Zincs and power wash while it's out.

Standard Martec all preassembled ... should be

no problem ... just remember every five years or so ... they need tightening at the factory. Vic "Seven"

Rick, now you have something to work

with, Lloyd Bridges and his team @ $$$$$$$ per hour versus haulout @ $$$ and two mechanics @ $$ and relaunch @ $$$.

Give me a B!

11 pounds of bronze with one moving widget that propels vessel when sails are down $$$! Give me an O! Local haulout in San Diego boatyard where apparently they think everyone has money $$$! Give me an A! One mechanic with 10th grade education and a cresent wrench at $$ and hour if im lucky cause you cant work on your own boat when it on the hard in good ol' cali. Give me a T! Fed ex ground $$, underwater metal detector $$$ cause I tried it in the water anyway and dropped the friggin widget pin! Whats that spell... Argggggggghhh! :) Cheers Rick s/v Whiskey Chaser

Props

Dont know about martec, but alot of the folding props require cutting the end of the shaft. Carl

Jeez, Rick. You should move to maryland

I bought a used 3 blade for 75 $ installed it myself, am pleased with the result. I pay 1800$ per year for slip fees, haul out, power wash, and spring launch, and winter storage.

Ok Ross you win!

It probably wont be that bad. Was just having a bit of fun. I really didnt like Carl saying you have to cut the end of the shaft. WTFO? Move to Maryland.. hmmmm. I actually live in AZ by the way. Just spend a lot of time in SAN. I'll be more serious from now on. My boat is kind of wierd anyways. When I sail it always seems to lean to one side.. I turn and it leans the other way. No rhyme, no reason.. just cant figure it out. Maybe the water tanks arent balanced. Cheers Rick

Yes ... maybe ...

The Martec has to go on with the blades off. The prop nut has to get aligned with two holes in the hub before the blades are put back on. Once the blades are back on the pivot pin and cotters complete the install. A diver that is used to doing that sort of work should have no problem, they have probably seen several martecs and know the drill. I would not want to try putting it together for the first time with the boat in the water.

Rick, . It is the water, it is

saltier on one side of the boat so she floats higher on that side. ;) That is the widest beach I have ever seen. Just get a really big fine mesh net to rig under the boat while they work down there in case somebody drops a small part. ;)

Ross I get it now...

More salt on the left.. she leans right. and er... visa versa. And just when I thought that rocket propulsion to mars couldnt be solved. Im really suprised "Obi" Fred didnt chime in here. He usually gets a kick out of useless banter. I will by a "saleeunation" meter and thoroughly check out these waters. Its the salt... arggghhh! Nice talking with ya Ross.. by the way, what kind of craft do you sail "by and full"? Cheers Rick
