Picture received of the Landing Spot, just before touch down.
Kind of like ET phone home. There is an orbiting communication package that relayed that picture and the successful touch down data.

Correction it was not Orbiting, but a timed "fly by" of Mars. It was perfectly timed to make that link and relay to assure JPL that the landing site was not the problem is not successful.
