A better explanation is needed as to how that happened. A few more pictures would be helpful too from different angles. If you have an insurance claim, the carrier will probably send out a marine surveyor

It does not look like an impact crack. If it had been hit I would expect circular and radiating cracks. It also doesn't look like the typical gelcoat spider cracks. It looks more like a stress crack or a crack from the substrate flexing. Perhaps as @Don S/V ILLusion illusion suggests from a dinghy davit or something else applying pressure to the area.

The crack isn't from a collision or other impact, there is a similar though less pronounced crack on the other side of the boat in the same location near the stern. An "old timer" I know said the stern on Hunters of this age was not an integral part of the hull mold, but bolted on and glassed in. his thoughts were that this could be a crack associated with that construction method. YIKES!

Can you see the area from the inside? If so, what does the fiberglass look like? Is it solid?

It may be necessary to do a little exploratory surgery and grind away the gelcoat to see the joint. If the joint is too flexible, the gelcoat will crack, it only needs to flex a few mm to crack as gelcoat is pretty brittle.
