Mariner 9.9 shaft length

I bought an Oday 25 with a Mariner 9.9 20" shaft,I think?My neighbor has same motor with a 5" extension in the lower unit,is it possible to add this to my motor? With my motor crew has to be in cockpit or else prop comes out of water.Ask a mariner dealer about extension and its either cost a fortune or buy a new motor.What length do you have? have you heard of an extension kit? would a different lowering bracket help?Thanks

I'd Trade It

Lowering the bracket a few more inches may be posssible, but its a lot of fussing, for little gain and you could poop the engine head with another boats wake or following wave, if its too low . I have never heard of adding on a lower unit extension. Didn't think it would be possible. Why not do some horse-trading with your dealer? See if you can swap it for a long shaft or sell it privately. It should make some fisherman happy. You will be an unhappy sailor if you can't bury that prop. I'd start saving for a long shaft. Hope you find one reasonably priced.Don

It can be done

but not by me. check out the current issue of "Good Old Boat" magazine. There is a how-to article on building an extension for an outboard. Forget about it unless you happen to be a skilled metal craftsman. I have never heard of an extension kit, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to find some mechanic to fabricate one for you, especially if you show them the how-to article. If you do buy a new engine, be aware that the "long shaft" designation seems to mean different things to different manufacturers. Take careful measurements of your mounting so that you will be able to determine how much lower any new engine will sit on your boat.
