mariner 2 2 side stay spreader

Are the side stay spreaders really necessary on a O'Day mariner? I recently broke a spreader while lowering my mast and am wondering what will happen If I sail my boat without a spreader. I will be replacing my spreaders soon, however Stuart Marine is closed until about Oct 15. Any suggestions?

J -I would not sail that boat without spreaders. If Stuart is closed try Cape Cod Ship Builing or go to Homedepot and buy some narrow wiring conduit.The strength in the rig comes from lateral support. Without the spreaders the angle between the wire and the mast is to close to have any meaningful effect. The rule of thumb is that the wire cannot meet the mast any more closely that 12.5 degeres - more is better.Justin - O'day Owners' Web
