so.. What if the difference (if any) between Marine paint and regular old Oil?I need to high gloss a bowsprit and I'm trying to decide if its necessary to get specialized paints or just use the non-marinized varity.thanks - jason
I have been using and liking Valspar, from Lowes. It is a urethane enamel, made for porch's and decks, available in gloss or semi gloss. The gloss variety which I have been using looks very good, and is available in almost any color imaginable. Can't attest to it's longevity yet, but so far so good.
Ross,The Lowes that I trade at will mix their porch and deck enamel to any color on the big board of colors. You know exactly which one I mean, the one where the women stand for hours trying to decide between two shades that I can't even tell apart.
I would stick with the marine paint... such as Interlux or Epiphanes. For the amount of paint you will need... the cost difference is minimal.Specialized please!
Thanks guys!I appreciate the pointers. (and Hi Ross. )This is for a my bowsprit project that I posted last month. (search "timber")The sprit is ready and I'm finishing it out myself. The trouble is that the sprit is at my house there's no marine paint (or other) stores near me. I'm going to go out tomorrow after work and grab a gallon from a hardware store I planned to visit anyway. I figured that exterior paint ie. oil enamel, would do the trick. I hope it does. I'll look at the names you all have posted and make an educated guess at which will work best. I plan to check this again tomorrow, so if anyone has any glaring reason why deck style paint simply wont do, please let me know soon..
I have used porch and deck enamels and many of the home center enamels but they never seem to stand up to the UV rays as well as a dedicated marine paint. I have even switched to Marine paint for "around the house stuff" when I need an oil based paint. It lays down better, is more durable and seems to adhere better. I painted a workbench with a porch & deck enamel and it chipped and scratched quite easily. The next one I did with Brightsides polyurethane and it performed well above my expectations.. The price difference was not an issue for me as my time is worth far more than the $10.00 difference in the paint price..
