Sometime in the coming year I will need to have a periodic survey performed as part of the insurance renewal. How involved are these surveys? Can someone point me to a typical checklist of items/areas that are reviewed by the surveyor. I would like to know generally what they will be looking for so that I can address as many as may be apparent prior to calling someone in.and then having to have them return to re-inspect any needed work. Thanks

Jim has the right idea...

You may also want to take a look at sample surveys that many folks have on the sites. They too will give you an idea of what to look at. In a similar search I did when I was researching surveys and surveyors prior to buying our boat this year, I ran across a fellow in Florida who had an extensive survey form on his site. I no longer havr the reference, but it was a great checklist!

Hardly worth it.

Yes, you need a survey. You need it for the insurance and for the peace of mind. But looking back on mine it was hardly worth it. The surveyor came highly recommended and put together a very nice document. He included pictures with things circled and typed text with explanations. Of the five things requiring resolution I have done three in the past four years. One - low places in hose leading to holding tank, will trap stuff(fixed). Two - bonding tab on rudder bearing surface not holding(fixed). Three - moisture in deck coring near chainplates(keep chainplates well sealed, no sign of moisture inside and no deck sponginess). Four - fuel hose is chafing against hull, should be replaced and rerouted(can't even find a chafe mark). Five - same for exhaust hose(can't find that either). On the other hand no mention was made of: 1) cheap gate valves, 2) lousy wiring with some circuits unfused, 3) loose shaft strut, 4) waterlogged rudder, and 5) low spot in fuel tank vent hose(traps fuel and then does not vent). All found and fixed the first season. So use the checklists to do your own survey. Then pay your $500. to prove how good you are. :)

Thanks for the responses.

Thanks for the comments all. I doubt I have much to deal with but I am stunned that it may run me the better part of $500 to just to "apply" to renew my ins. I asked the ins. brokers for their form but they only gave me very brief statement form - who the surveyor is , that it was inspected in accordance to some survey principles and the date of any repairs made because of it. This sounds like it could become a project -even on a well taken care of boat. Jim
