What is it with suppliers these days? I was attempting to order Quick Attach eye fittings to shorten the shrouds on my boat. The first order claimed they were available to ship pronto. So several days later I get an e-mail saying they will not be available to them from Suncor till the beginning of May and then at least a 10 day wait for the mail. So I canceled the order and ordered thru James Town. Guess what same thing only they will not be restocked till the end of May so again cancel. One last attempt and again ditto. Looks like I'll have to wire the shroud to the chainplate and take a measurement from the top of the turnbuckle and mark the shroud for the bottom of the loop and have a local rigging shop in Halifax shorten the shrouds for me :( big bummer is all I can say. I know stainless isn't the easiest thing to work with but come on now .

PS 4 weeks and 4 days till I hope to finally launch and see how this boat actually performs.

The distributors don't stock a lot, preferring to drop-ship from the manufacturers. It helps hold the prices down. So if Suncor, for example, is behind in production of a certain fitting, then Wm, Jamestown, Defender, will all be back ordering. At least I think that's how it works.

I guess that what irritates me about this is that 2 of the sites indicated online that they had the parts in stock at time of ordering. I know about the drop shipping issue as well.

The irritating thing is that for some unknown reason to me anyways many of these parts cost nearly double here in Atlantic Canada then what they do south of the 49th :cussing:

let me discuss from the perspective of a buisness as I use to for many years stock the largest selection of new sailboats world wide.

When stocking, most of the times dealers/distibutors do not have the funds but have to borrow in order to purchase those items which means interest payments are part of the norm in buisness. In the case of the distrubutors for parts, they will stock at all times what sells on a regular buisness. When a less requested item is ordered, it may or may not be in stock due to low demand which then the distibutor orders from the manufacturer. Because most distributors sell discounted vs. full retail in competition with other distributors, they have to watch overhead which includes the interest payments as well. Therefore, if a slow item is stocked without selling quickly, the distributor may be spending alot of money on interest for that particular item which if is sits too long, then profit is not earned. These distributors are working on limited margins.

However, there is another curve. Maufactueres will only build when they get enough orders thus the distributors are at the mercy of the manufacturer. Sometimes it is comlicated if built overseas due to shipping, lousy construction which have to be sent back, weather affecting plants of mfg and so on.

I am out of buisness and much of the profit to stocking boats over 6 months in length went to the banks. In many ways, I am glad to be out of buisness as I no longer have to pay the interest.

for rigging parts I would suggest that you give Seco South a call. Good prices and good service.

Brina,
You might check with Sail Care. They are a mom and pop outfit and if they don't have the parts in stock they will not BS you.

Thanx Merlin,

I had a look at their site a few minutes ago. I have 4 weeks to go so I will perhaps give them a call today. First though I will confirm the cost at the riggers in Halifax as 'next' year I intend to up the standing rigging wire to 5/32 and hate to buy the 1/8'' eyes now just to discard them next year, unless of course it works out to be a better deal.

To everyone else, thanx. I had a look but no one carried the Suncor 'Quick Attach' fittings.
