The time has come to replace my old Clarion unit with a new stereo/dvd player. I am looking at a Fusion 600 series or possibly a 700 series (nmea2000), with the wired remote control. Problem is there is very little room to run the cable so the connector might not fit. Has anyone tried to cut and then splice the remote control cable with any success on one of these units?

What, no going the whole nine yards and installing an ethernet and going the wireless route? Does seem like overkill on a boat. The remote has very fine wires, and they usually are tough to cut and reconnect. As I recall though, the connector wasn't all that big, maybe a little bigger than your little finger.

squeeze me???
WIRED remote control???
So you drag a hand held device all over the cabin with this wire going back to the unit????
surely there is an IR remote control like west marine stereos have. Mine came standard with one.

The Fusion remote is designed to be mounted in the cockpit. It is NOT a handheld unit. It fully replicates the display and controls of the head-unit. Its a very nice piece. All three of our boats have them.

The remote and the head-unit talk over a CAN-BUS network interface. The cable is a rather complex affair. You might be able to cut it, and splice it, but I would be very careful.

Ahhhhhh!
A remote face. I knew I was not getting it.
When I splice little wires in a sheath I like to do it like a long splice. ie. don't place all the splices at the same place. Space them out over several inches so there is no possibility of them touching at a later date. Makes for a thinner splice also.

I did it with a Sony wired remote. They call their system a uni-link network.

Took my time, spliced the line, soldered the connections, two layers of heat shrink each extending well past the splice. No problems so far.
