For years my old Hunter 27 has been on a mooring and I've had to add diesel fuel 5 gallons at a time with a jerry can. I've always used auto fuel from the local gas station. Now I'm wondering if there is any difference. other than the price, between auto and marine diesel.

at Deckers Landing, a fuel dock in the middle of Lk. St. Clair, on Harsen's Island, claims that marine diesel burns cleaner. When I use marine diesel, in my '78 27' Hunter, the transom seems to stay cleaner. I clean the transom with citric based cleaners, cleans the oil smudges.

there is only one difference

Refineries produce only one type of diesel fuel with a specified max conc of sulfur. The ONLY difference between so-called marine and OTR diesel is the former is dyed to indicate no "road" tax on it's distribution. Having said that, there are two grades of diesel: Number 1 and Number 2, one cut with 10% kerosene used in cold winter climates to minimize gelling. Other than that, there is no difference except the price charged by marinas which some might tend to justify with an imaginative story like it burns cleaner...
