You never know what you are going to hear at the boat yard.

Someone was very adamant that they had read that having a white bottom offshore is dangerous. Whales think you are a killer whale and attack... Really?

That, and naming your boat Lil' Orca. You're asking to be attacked or mounted.

Never heard that one, but then we don't worry about it much on the Great Lakes.

There are a lot of good size white bottom boats that go offshore in Florida. Never heard of them being stalked by whales.

My vote is MYTH.

Whales are said to be intelligent creatures. Let us hope that they are smart enough to be able to tell the difference between a slow as justice sailboat and an Orka that can catch and kill a seal.

Maybe if they'd gone with Big Orca none of that would have ever happened.

Well, everyone knows that whales mate underwater... so.. just make sure your boat stays afloat... that way if the whale does want to fool around, you'll be the one in charge.

You know, of course, that a whale is considered one the world's sexiest animals... a seventeen foot tongue with a hole in the back of their head to breathe through.

I don't believe there is such a thing as a white boat bottom.. it would take..what??.. about two days to get slimey green??

No Whitebottoms

About 15 years ago just before I retired from the navy, a good friend went off-shore in a private fishing boat in Hawaii. It flipped and they survived 6 days in the ocean. Iwill never forget him telling me his feeling of despair as they clung to the white bottomed boat surrounded by white caps as search planes flew right over them and didn't see them. unless they are sick I don't think whales are going to make the mistake of confusing a boat and anything else.

i , personally , have never seen a cruising boat with a white bottom. trailerables, yes-- but not a stay in the water cruiser with heavy displacement. gooood luck, smooth sailing.

That's one of the reasons I've never cared for blue/green bottom paint. I don't want the bottom of the boat to blend in with the water. If the bottom's up, I want it to be noticed!
