I'd be interested in knowing what specific marine applications are popular with Ipad users.
I plan to download a Navionics, Radar US (weather),Ship Finder (AIS),Star Walk and Battery Boost Magic.

Thanks

I have been using iNavX ,available from the Apple Appstore. iNavX uses the free NOAA marine charts.
Works like a charm! Full of nice features!

Sea IQ. I don't have the data enabled IPad so I use the Dual XGPS150 via Bluetooth. It is really great. The Active Captain data is a real nice feature as well. The support has been great. The developer is actually a full time cruiser, for the past 3 years if I am not mistaken. I am from the North West end of Lake Superior, Thunder Bay Ontario and have been on my 84 Hunter 31 with my family since August 28, currently In North Carolina, and I have used this App for the balance of my trip so far. Really can t beat it for the price.

My Macbook pro is my workhorse for navigation using MacENC for S57/digital and raster based charting, direct AIS, GRIB downloads via SSB, direct feed from GPS, etc. etc. However the Macbook is vulnerable to 'weather' and I simply use "Air Display" to transmit the Macbooks screen directly to an iPad mini (in waterproof case) AT the helm station.

Even with an iPad w/ wifi and cell enabled, Im still NOT sure/convinced of the iPads GPS accuracy, and am 'suspicious' of its 'resolution' (errors).

from the Apple iPad website:
Location Services lets location-based apps such as Reminders, Maps, and Camera gather and use data indicating your location. Your approximate location is determined using available information from the cellular network data (on Wi-Fi + cellular models), local Wi-Fi networks (if you have Wi-Fi turned on), and GPS (may not be available in all areas). The location data collected by Apple isn’t collected in a form that personally identifies you. When an app is using Location Services, appears in the menu bar.

... the 'red' and GPS (may not be available in all areas) 'may' mean that on iPads the GPS function is 'probably' dependent on your proximity to a cell phone tower. How many cell phone towers have you seen when far out at sea?

I have the Navionics, new Garmin app, Intellicast boating weather, Predict Wind and Boat Beacon, a cell phone AIS. Navionics is good and pretty much agrees with my chart plotter. The new Garmin app with weather is also good, but is a follow route only program if you don't have Garmin electronics (mine are Raymarine).

I also use Teamviewer to connect my Ipad in the cockpit to my laptop at the chart table running Raytech. I have on board AIS receive only and my 2003 model chart plotter will not connect with AIS so the only way to get AIS to the cockpit is to wirelessly connect my pic to the Ipad. Works pretty good!
