I have a Yanmar 3MY30 engine and the manual does not specify a marine gear lubrication oil for the transmission. Any recommendations. The engine takes 15W-40 and I have that covered.

Our Yanmar (4JH2-TE) has an identification plate on the bell housing between the transmission and engine that states the type of transmission lubricate. Our service manual and owner's manual conflict as to which. Your engine should have that identification plate. I would follow what it says.

Thank you very much. Found it on the backside of the transmission. SEA 20/30HD.

As a side note, our transmission dip stick has a ring just above the bottom of the tube, maybe 3/16th inch. That is the full mark and measured with the dip stick cap resting on the transmission housing, not screwed in.

Thanks again.....mine has the same and it was driving me nuts to figure how much oil to put in so I just measured with a measuring cup the amount called for in the manual, .6pints or little over a cup. I will look at the stick today and see where the level is at.

Hmm. Seems not enough, IMHO. Then again maybe our Kanzaki is larger and takes more lubricate; almost a full quart of ATF to bring the level to the dip stick mark.

Now you got me worried. I will relook the manual today and check the dip stick.

Kanzaki in the 3YM30 takes .3 litres ( or just over .6 pints ) of HD 30W oil. Just did mine over the weekend.

My Hurth takes the same amount, . 6 pint. ATF on that one though. Don't know what they do if over filled, but with that little amount there's not much distance between a little low and empty. So check it often.

Any tricks for reading the dip stick? When I pull it out it fit so tight it seems to wipe itself dry. Also the oil is clear in the first place so twice as difficult. I wish they made a dye for guys with bad eyes in tight spaces.

Don't wipe it. Just roll it on a paper towel, you'll see it clearly. Good luck.

I even pulled the printout out today while sailing to make sure I read it right...and your right...watch that often.

Stu thanks for the tip on using paper towel. I've been struggling all these years trying to read the level with that dip stick.
