Having read a number of horror stories about the deterioration of diesel fuel in long term storage, I am concerned about the upcoming winterization of our new boat's fuel system. Common wisdom not withstanding, topping off the fuel tank does not adequately protect diesel fuel from deterioration. It helps, but is not enough. I have been trying to bone up on additives and would like to know whether any boat owner has experience with PRI's diesel fuel stabilizer. PRI's internet ad is convincing, but unsolicited testimonials from boat owners/PRI users would be better.

PRI-D

After having the fuel polished in Aegis, a T33 with Universal 5424 engine, the fuel polisher highly recommended PRI-D as an additive. He liked the stabelizing qualities as well as the biocide treatment ability of this additive. I,ve used it now for almost a year and have not had any fuel problems. We are not talking about winterization here in Florida, but we do have very hot humid conditions that cause the insides of fuel tanks to sweat and condensate. This can cause water and then algae and micro organisms to grow if not treated. PRI-D seems to help prevent this. Hope this helps in your research.

I use "Power Service" additive in the winter

And I also put in a double dose of biocide. Never a problem. A caution- be sure to leave adequate expansion room in the fuel tank when topping off for the winter. I failed to do this last year and the fuel expanded through the vent and put a stain on my custom cover that is 6' x 10'.

Basic precautions

Each winter layup, I add a diesel stabilizer (you choice which brand) and usually top off the fuel to ward off condensation. That's all I do for fuel winterization. In 10 years there have been no problems. Also, don't forget to winterize the fresh water cooling system if you are in freezing climates. And loosen the belts when the boat is moved to the hard.
