Has anybody installed marine carpet in the cabin of an H240? Was it installed with glue, tape, velcro, or other means? Any positive and/or negatives about marine carpet in the cabin sole?

Marine carpet?

I did not know that there was a "marine" carpet. We have wall-to-wall in our H37C. Since it is hard to move with the table on it I have a cutout for access to the bilge. It is a rubber-backed carpet from Stone Mountain. I made a pattern and they cut and bound it. The rubber backing does not slip and it does not scratch the varnished teak. Only problem is that there is a limited selection of rubber-backed carpet. I guess if you found another type that you really liked you could put down a thin rubber pad.

glue

Steve; You probably have an area that is drooping down I would think. You can buy a glue used for indoors and outdoors that will glue carpet to the hull. I have been using Contact Cement by Weldwood from the hardware store. Make sure you spread thinly as too much in one place will cause it to bleed through. also, stay out of the boat for several days for the smell to go away as it is not good for you. I have done that and gone bonkers at times thus loosing some brain cells. Good luch and Happy Sailing. Crazy dave condon

Chop & drop

I cut to fit from 1-piece I bought from Cabela's and just laid it down, thinking I could remove it for cleaning easier. The only place it tends to lift is the little area just to starboard of the steps, but it's no big deal. I wouldn't glue it because it would be tough to get up when time came to replace it, plus if it gets really wet inside you couldn't pull the carpet out to dry up. But that's my opinion, for what it's worth.

Edge binding

We bought a commercial grade remanent, cut it to fit the sole under the table. Then we took it to a carpet binder to bind the edges. Looks professional, we can take it out and hose it off to clean it. Total cost under $75.

Same here.

Like Nancy, we got some burber carpeting from a carpet store. We cut it to fit and took it to the carpet shop for binding. It has been down for 5 or 6 years. It is starting to look like it needs to be cleaned or replaced but has help up well. Binding is the most expensive part but the carpet does not unravel and it looks professional.

Carpet

We went to the local home improvement center and bought some blue, outside deck carpet. We made a template and cut to fit. It has some sort of skid resistant back so it doesn't move as we "walk" around down below. Works great, looks great, and easy to remove. It matches the blue color of our cushions. Cost was only about $25 for the whole piece which we can make 2 rugs out of.

Marine carpet

There is marine grade carpet. And there is marine (or waterproof) carpet adhesive. When i rebuilt an old motor cruiser I got the marine carpet from the local Lowe's. But I am not sure you'd want to use the adhesive on fiberglass decking (mine was wood). Have you thought about using metal snaps?

No Glue Please

We put in a marine grade carpet two years ago and it works great, it stays in place without any help due to the rubberlike bottom. I would newer use glue in a small boat like the 240. Any day it will go wet by some reason and if it is glued you can´t take it out for drying and cleaning - imagine the smell you can get from a cup of salt water, milk or beer. We take the carpet out for cleaning with a brush two or three times a week. If it is glued you need a good vacuum cleaner and we certainly don´t have the space or the electricity for that.

Binding allowance

How much clearance should be cut around the edges to allow for binding? I just cut mine to fit, but edge binding sounds like a really good idea, and can be done here for $1.50/foot plus $2.00 per inside corner.

Binding allowance

It didn't take up much. Close to 1/4 inch. The company that does your binding can tell you for sure.
