Marinas that fit sailors in upper Chesapeake Bay

We are looking for a Marina in the upper bay = Baltimore, Annapolis area, that fits us. We are currently at Hammock Island in Pasadena which we hate to leave, but a larger boat can't be accommodated there unless someone leaves, and it's so nice, no one wants to leave, including me.

We are looking at hunter 36 to 41, and we like a marina that feels Natural, not a parking lot. Electric and water for the boat dock a must. Nice owners helps. We don't need a lot more, even private docks would be good. Currently we have a bathroom with showers, and a room to view the water should it be a messy day to be out and about on the water. Pools, food, fuel, etc. are nice but not a priority, and not something we want to pay extra to have. If you have ideas or comments, feel free to send a private message to post, or if you're bold post to the forum. Thanks.

Not sure where New Oxford is, but I know where PA is. It's a good drive to Annapolis, but if you feel like you'd want to drive here, I know of a 40-foot slip at my marina on Back Creek. A guy is moving his new Cat380 out due to lack of beam width of 13'1".. Maybe not a concern for your new boat.

When you live by a creek near Gettysburg, you don't mind driving an hour and a half to Annapolis to sail. :) we need 41' and a 13'3" beam, 5' draft . Would that work??

You could probably manage the 41, the five is not a problem, but the guy is moving out because his 13'1" boat only has a couple inches to spare.

Have you visited Herrington Harbour North and Herrington Harbor South? North includes a working boatyard, South is ON the Chesapeake. It would add 30 minutes to your drive.

HHN and HHS have all the "nice" items and well worth the extra 30 min. but will add extra cost you may not want. I am at South and LOVE it. 5 min from slip to sails up in the Bay.

Maryland Yacht Club, Fairview Marina, and Magothy Marina all have a similar vibe to Hammock Island and are in the same general vicinity. If you want a small, no-frills marina , you may want to scour the classifieds in Spinsheet and also check Craigslist.

As far as private docks, my understanding is that many homeowners who rent slips behind their homes aren't properly permitted or insured to operate a "marina" and so on the off chance something were to go wrong, there could be liability/insurability issues. This is something where everyone needs to do their own due diligence with their own insurers/legal experts, but to us it's never been worth the potential downsides. Not to mention, there aren't a huge number of private slips that are well protected and can accommodate 40 foot sailboats.

Rock Hall or Worton are great for people coming from the Philadelphia area and points northeast but the OP is coming from Gettysburg. Driving from there to Rock Hall or Worton would be torturous even on the best of days.

[QUOTE="Peggie Hall HeadMistress, ...Any reason why no one has mentioned Rock Hall?[/QUOTE]

It's on the far side of the bay from Gettysburg.

Yes, you MUST avoid the Rt. 50 bridge across the bay in the beach season.

Havre de Grace MD. About as far north on the bay as you can get. Nothing fancy. Maybe too far from the Baltimore Annapolis area for you.

Oak Harbor Marina on Rock Creek near the mouth of the Patapsco River is a family owned 100 slip marina with a boat yard with basic services, restrooms w/ showers, laundary room, and social deck w/ grills. Of the 100 slips about 90 are sailboats. Most slip holders have been there for more than a decade. We have had our Hunter 356 there for 10 years and some of our best friends are our fellow slip holders. I have learned more from them on boat maintenance and troubleshooting than any classes or service professionals. The marina is about a have mile up the creek and very well protected from storms, wind and rough water. Water depth averages about 8 ft. There is a pump out station at the marina and a fuel dock at the Maryland Yacht Club marina near the mouth of the creek. There is usually a waiting list for slips, but there were several slips open this past year. Very friendly owners and reasonable prices.
