Due to time constraints I've decided to truck my boat to Florida and sail to the Caribbean from there. Can anyone recommend a marina in Florida preferably on the gulf coast that has the facilities to launch a 35' sailboat and step the mast? Thanks

Miami River...

Hurricane Cove is a do it yourself yard with a number of techs (mechanical, paint, crane etc.) You can launch your boat and probably store it there till you get settled in. The main number is: 305-324-8004 Hurricane Cove 1884 NW North River Dr. Miami, Fl. A friend of mine has his shop there, he knows everybody and can help facilitate all your needs (Crane for mast and help with bottom paint.) When I did my bottom, I bought my supplies thru him. He supplied scaffolds and all tools and power cords. He also "coached" me thru the grinding and barrier coats. I do not have his number handy, but can get it when the time comes. Good luck, Marc

Hurricane Cove Marina

Thank you very much Capt. Marc for the info. Looking at map of Miami, I assume you can take a sailboat with a 47' mast down that river to the ocean. Right?

All the bridges open. There are some curfews at rush hour. EZ trip to Biscayne Bay. Boats go up and down the river regularly. During Hurricanes we tie to marinas up river for shelter. Marc

I only know of Burnt Store Marina. They may have taken a hit from Charley, but may be worth checking them out. Supposed to be a nice, secure area. They are in Punta Gorda. My friend is moving there soon. See the related link, also. http://www.burntstoremarina.com/

Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I'll check them out. I wonder how that got that name. I'm not sure which side of Florida would be better to head to Cuba (I know, some of you would say neither). If I were to go to the Dry Tortugas first to take advantage of the gulf stream, it would look as if the west side would be better.

Sailor's Warf Progressive (be careful here, get everything in writing) Salt Creek Marina Embree boat works The Harborage - they may have sold the big-boat operation to someone else. A bit farther south - in Palmetto Florida on the Manatee River you will find Snead Island Boat Works With the possible exception of Progressive, all are good places. Only Salt Creek will let you do your own work. But there is very little to do to get the boat launched. Step the mast and drop it in the water, checking that the packing glands, thru-hulls aren't leaking.
