Marina Del Rey to Newport Beach

Does anyone know how long it takes to sail to Newport from Marina Del Rey ? Also, what is the best time to depart ? Any special times to avoid (other than the cover of darkness?)Thanks...I've bought a new boat and am trying to break up the trip to San Diego.

It Can be a Long Sail

Terry -- Depends of course on weather conditions. I've sailed my C30 twice from Marina del Ray to Long Beach and each time with light winds in the morning it took about 8 hours dock-to-dock. I think it would be another 2-3 hours from Long Beach to Newport, maybe a little less. I almost suspect it would have been less both times if I had waited to depart later in the day so as to have favorable winds the entire trip. Also if you're sailing from Newport up it'll be close reaching up past San Pedro unless you get a ways off shore. Good luck!Mike TurnerS/V Amity

what about Catalina Island?

Have you considered stopping over in Catalina, rather than Newport? Should be downwind all the way. Avalon to San Diego Mission Bay is about 65 nm. Just a thought.
