Put boat in the water for the spring - all systems go - except - the head doesn't pump in sea water for bowl flush - will pump out contents just fine - made sure through hull is open....next steps?

flapper valve

I bet it is the flapper valve located at the top of the plunger. It is a easy fix to repace and tkes 5 minutes to replace. I've been told that the anti-freeze is hard on the valves and thus the probalem.

If it's a Jabsco toilet...

The flapper valve is most likely the culprit, especially if you left the toilet is the dry mode for the winter...'cuz that causes the rubber to distort, preventing the pump from priming. If you've been pumping away trying to get the flush water started, you've put a lot of air into the tank, so if you haven't already done so, make sure your tank vent is clear...dirt daubers love to build nests in the thru-hulls. If you didn't thoroughly flush out the tank AND the vent line last fall, check the vent line connection at the tank--the fitting and that end of the hose--and clear out any blockage. Glad you enjoyed my book!

WM sells the 'service kit'....

which contains all the parts you will need - the upper flapper valve, the lower flapper valve, the joker valve, all the gaskets, etc. Downside is that the kit costs about $60. 2 years ago they also had the whole toilet on sale for about $90, so I bought it. This year I bought the service kit - it's not hard to install the parts if you follow the instructions, takes about an hour - and the Commodore was amazed at how well the toilet flushes. :) One thing - be sure you know whether you have the pre-1999 or post-1999 version of the toilet - you can tell the difference by the design of the top of the pump body. The service kit label shows what each looks like, and they're not interchangeable. So, you can do all that, or (in deference to our Headmistress) you can go spend $300 on a REAL toilet - like the Raritan - that seems to last forever and never need servicing(?). :) Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8
