Getting Manuals

Hi Jill, Give the Hunter factory parts department a call at 1-800-771-5556 extension 3015. I called them about a year and a half ago for a manual for my H28 and they had it in the mail to me the same day. Got it a few days later. Cost was $20.00 USD plus shipping. It was a photocopied set of sheets for all the systems on the boat. It looks like the original manual of the time was probably just loose leaf sheets as well. There was nothing on the engine however, except starting and stopping procedures. You will have to get a yanmar manual (or whatever your engine is) seperately. Good luck.

Here is a free link, but

I have no idea if they have what you need. http://www.ayesail.net/sailing/ManualsForHunter.html

Also Collect Catalogs

Getting the Ships Manual is a good first step and after that I'd suggest collecting catalog information on everything you can about the boat. I'm thinking of things like the ports, anchor, rigging, blocks, stove, head, running lights, etc., etc. Eventually things will need to be repaired or replaced and with the catalog sheets you'll know the manufacturer and part numbers that are needed. What type and wattage is the running/anchor/steaming light? With your catalog you can look it up. When buying new items for the boat be sure to save the instructions. How is the PFD supposed to be folded? What inflatable cartridge is supposed to be used? What weight-range is the PFD good for? What is the Safe Working Load on that block? What thinner can be used with that varnish?, etc. The answer is in the paperwork that came with the item. Generally speaking the local chandelery will have catalogs or may be able to get some from the distributors. With the advent of the internet there seems to be fewer catalogs available than there used to be so maybe the info is available at the mfgs web site. Boat shows are another good place to pick up catalogs. Recommend get a (Yanmar?) engine manual too. Good luck and have fun with your new boat!

John, several technical items I've bought of late

came with no manuals. Like the new change over switch for my camper generator. Just the switch in a cardboard box. They don't even give you their web address. You have to figure it out. It must have taken at LEAST one minute to get the wiring diagram on line. Thanks Bill Gates and NAFTA. P.S. After I wrote the above post, I drove into town to pick up a new pump for my hot tub. Yep. NO paper work except the invoice. And it was in a sealed box.

Fred - I think they're making a mistake

Change-over switch without instructions? I think they're making a mistake. When I look at the instructions that come with, say, a Blue Sea breaker switch (thinking of something that is somewhat comperable), they have a lot to say of interest. For example, they tell you what the continuous and intermitent ratings are; mine had: 1. 4 paragraphs with regard to Operation (and this is just a 1/2/both/off switch) 2. 9 paragraphs plus wiring diagram on Installation 3. a section on the AFD (automatic field disconnect) which itself had 5 paragraphs plus a wiring diagram just for the AFD, and, 6. a Guarantee section. Anyway, it's usefull reading and it's incorporated in my "Ships Manual". To show the value of these instructions I'd like to mention some that came with my new Ancor double-crimp crimpers, Part #701030 . Now these are not cheap crimpers - retail somewhere near a $100 bucks. Sure, they tell you about where to place the terminal and all that stuff but down near the end, under "Warning", there is a note that says "THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS A CHEMICAL KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER OR BIRTH DEFECTS OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM. WASH HANDS AFTER USING." Now they don't way what the "chemical" is or where it is but since they are metal with a neoprene or plastic handle I suspect the "stuff" is in the handle. Let me mention something else. After I took the outdoor Christmass lights down (these are the "ice cicles" type that hang from the gutter), I put them away in the box they came in and just happened to glance at the writing in small print on the box. Lo and behold it says "Hazardous". "The insulation contains lead which is a chemical known to ......". You get the idea. The lights were made in China and the ratchet crimpers were made in Taiwan. My guess is the plastic used on the Ancor crimpers contains lead too. I've learned a lot by reading these instructions. Speaking of instructions, a box arrived the day before yesterday and I have some reading to do. Got this LoFrans Progress I windlass to install (with a complete set of instructions, of course). Attached is a picture of the windlass with Schnurrli, a.k.a. "the swabbie" (that's what we call him, actually it's really HIS boat - we just pay the taxes!) checking it out.

Need a Yanmar manual too.

Jill: The yanmar manuals are on line via a link from this website (thanks to one of our fine fellow sailors). I would highly recommend that you also purchase a Yanmar manual for about $30-35. It tell you about the engine, service intervals, oil and tranmission service etc. It is just a good reference book when some other expertice is not available.

John, I think you're right.

I was aghast at the lack of documentation! I sent some cabling back to Ancor about two years ago because it was NOT tinned. They too were,,, well,,,aghast. They sent to me, as an apology for their failure,,,, are you ready?,,,DRUM ROLL,,,Yep, the same crimper's,,,, with NO DOCUMENTATION OR WARNING LABEL'S! Where is the FBI when you need them?!!! Maybe we should put Swabbie on the case? :) P.S. The only docs I got with my Blue Seas System breaker for my windlass, was a recall notice. The notice was sent incorrectly. Wrong switch, mine was fine. *o

warning! the state of california may be hazardous!

John, welcome to the new age! the state of california's infamous "prop 65" requires those warnings on everything in the state that might, remotely,at some time, be considered hazardous. the stuff you're looking at is probably no different than anything made in the USA, but companies are sticking on those warnings to comply-almost everthing that is plastic emits some VOCs, so they need the warning in CA

Chuck - but it still leaves me concerned

I don't mind the warnings about potentially hazardous materials so much as NOT being warned. I'm not upset that there is a warning label. What upsets me is a couple things, that the label is kinda buried in the rest of the instructions, and, that it's apparently the handle (my guess) which the part that a person grips, and typically with bare hands in order to use the tool, is where the 'bad' chemical is (lead suspected). At least a person that is provided the appropriate information can make a decision on their own. In this case, at least I'd have a choice. Another thing that is interesting is I saw the same exact pair of double-crimpers in an electronics store packaged but without the warning label. Well, they were the same except the plastic handle was a different color and there was no Ancor sticker on the crimpers. That disturbs me even more! Now anytime I see something with a plastic that has "that feel", which is hard to describe but is sort of "slippery", and comes from Taiwan, China, or that area, I will be suspect. Over the years I've seen many things, such as certain chemicals, that the Government and/or industry led us to believe was no problem and later it turns out that the stuff was bad stuff. The DDT spraying of food in the 50's, devices using radiation to view your feet in the shoe store (you could actually see the bones in your feet and the outline of the shoes), nuclear blast fallout in the late 50's and early 60's. Then there was trichloethylene (great carburetor cleaner) which we used as a degreaser prior to painting (with lead paint) in the early 60's. More recently it's other chemicals like lead in the solder for copper pipe joints, etc. Often it took years to determine the cause and effect relationship between the chemicals and health problems. And today my concern is the cumulative effect of all the chemicals that we come into contact with that, taken individually, are at "safe" levels. The cave man didn't have to worry about things like creosote, acetone, chloro-, -ides, -ieums, etc., and breathing super-fine particulates like those from rubber and diesel exhaust but we're really starting to get hit by these things big time. Personally, I'd just like to know what I'm dealing with and that way I can make a judgment call on the degree of exposure vs. the possible health considerations. I don't know what Calif Prop 65 is but with commerce the way it is if one state like Calif that imports a lot of things form the orient has a law then I can see where we in other states get these coded warnings but unfortunately we don't know the reasons behind them. That's interesting to know. Thanks for the connection.

John, great read/post

Much of what we are warned about can be traced back to our court system and the need to support a HUGH number of lawyers. How else to explain that two thousand years ago we would have been doing good to have lived to 29 years of age? (Roman life expectancy)

Roman Life Expectancy Low Due To Lions!

Fred - I think the Roman life expectancy number example may have been slightly skewed. If it weren't for the lions the life expectancy would have been higher. Wasn't it something like - Lions 1, Christians 0? But you're right, there have been a lot of advances that have improved life, at least for homosapians.

John, the disabled slaves and criminals were lion

food. Not Roman citizens, in good standing. :) I knew there was another reason I gave up on Catholicism/religion.

prop 65 part 2

John, I agree with you, I'd rather be warned-but the CA law seems to force warnings without the data you need to interpret the significance of the warning-and I think that when everything has a warning on it, no one will pay attention...dangerous chems normally have an MSDS created that spells out the details-and mfrs are required by law to provide them-but believe it or not, there are around 28 different MSDS's for water!-don't forget, too much water can kill you! :)

Check your garden hose before you purchase.

Hey guys: Before you purchase a garden hose to fill your water tank, be sure to check them too! I was going to purchase a new one and Costco and the damn thing said something about not being suitable for drinking water "may cause birth defects.....".
