Hey All...

Just purchased a Jabsco manual head and now I'm starting to shop for a pump to empty the holding tank. This will be an upgrade from a port-o-potty.

Anyway, I found a Whale Gusher Manual Waste Pump for $118 ... and I snagged the head for only $58... so I hate the idea of spending twice on the pump than I did on the head...

And SBO has another Pump by Whale called the Urchin. The Urchin is only $65.

I have also read a very brief thread here on SBO that seems to suggest the Urchin is suitable for this purpose.

Anyone else have any first hand... or experiential wisdom to share?

Since I'm dealing with "unmentionables" I really don't want to make a foolish penny wise decision.

Just to focus the thread a bit. I will almost never use this pump since I will use pump out stations whenever I can... and I almost never sail far enough off shore to even make it legal... but I want to have the ability to pump over the side in the event the need arises (I hope someday to take longer cruises). So the fact that this pump will be a PITA to use compared to an electric mercerator is a secondary concern. And I don't want an electrical waste pump because it has been my experience that electrical things left unused for long periods of time don't work when you need them too.... and then you REALLY need them too work.

I currently have two of the Whale Urchins for waste pumpout and had a Whale Gusher on a prior boat. They both are quality pumps that do the job. I would go with the Gusher if the pump is not mounted in a locker,,, because it hides the large rubber diaphragm inside of a plastic case,, whereas the Urchin's diaphragm is exposed and is not so attractive and could possible be ruptured from a sharp object.

My 1985 boat came with an Urchin for emptying the holding tank. The pump works very well .. Very durable .. easy to service.. Last time I bought parts, I found an internet place in the UK that beat the prices of everyone in the US..

Make the Whale pump do double duty with 'cross over' valving .... one section pumps the poo, the other section pumps the bilge (and can clean out the residual poo in the pump with bilge water when you switch back to bilge pumping). If you don't have an emergency manual bilge, the addition of two valves and bit more 'hose' will let you do this 'double duty'.
