I need to sail my boat from Muskegon Mi to East Chicago IN. Does anyone have any experience with speed of the Catalina 27 with 18HP diesel.

hull speed is 6.25 knots

But you won't make anywhere near 6.25 over the trip from Muskegon to E Chicago. Most common wind direction will be anywhere from on the nose to a close reach. When we used to bring the boat back to Chicago on from the Mac race, we used to harbor hop at about 50 miles a day. Course, we were taking a week to get there. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Tom...he'll still be making hull speed (boat speed), but the ground speed will be less.

figure and work at maintaining average SOG at 5 Kts. with mild sea conditions and adverse currents of no more than .5 kts. Down to about 4.3 as seas worsen although in small craft warnings I've managed to average hull speed but nobody was having fun but me. There are so many variables that it's almost a daily computation that can vary widely on an hourly basis. Figure 3 to 5 knots as conservative. In one 30 mile stretch I've gone from 15 kts of wind to nothing and back again. With sailboats the fastest passage can mean waiting a couple days for weather window and favorable winds.
