I wonder if anyone has a clever idea for covering the mainsail in the area around the exit points for the Dutchman control lines in the mainsail cover. It has always been an area where the sail gets dirty and worn because the holes in the original cover were so large. I am considering of some kind of slotted fabric insert which would be kept in place with velcro attaced under the cover in those areas. A sacrificial patch applique (?) on the sail itself could also work but might look a little strange. Anyone have other ideas?

I use a Slotted Towel...

...to wrap around each (2) control line at that point in the sail cover. Although the nylon Dutchman discs protect that portion of the sail from the sun, I still used the to protect the sail from sun deterioration.

no slots

When I had the dutchman on my boat, the mainsail cover had no slots. I simply adjusted the topping lift so the Dutchman filiments were loose and out of the way of the cover.

I currently keep two little covers I tuck in under the cover and around the filament lines to keep sun/rain out. When I have a new cover made, I plan to do what Jentine mentions...make a regular solid cover and just run the filament lines underneath and outside the cover.

I read somewhere...

about using small funnels slit length wise, slipped on the filiment and down on top of the sail cover. The end of the funnel was siliconed prior to slitting. Seems like too much work, I like Jentine's idea, plain sail cover and slack the filiments. I have a Dutchman flaking system and that is one of the problems I have with it, the other is that I can't slacken it enough. This may lead me to install a rigid vang.
