Has anyone made their own bimini top? Bent the alumninum tubing and all? Where would you go to purchase the equipment for a do-it-yourself job?

The chandlery here has biminis. Sailrite has kits and cd-roms/videos on how to do it

bimini

Made a bimini for my hunter 34 3 years ago. I sail in fresh water so I made it out of 3/4" galvanized electrical tubing (I know what you are thinking guys, but it hasn't rusted to date). Used a tubing bender (available at Lowes or electrical supply houses) for the sharp bends and made a form for the long bends across the top by putting nails in the desired pattern in a wood 2X10. Sewed the sunbrella on an ordinary home sewing machine. It came out OK.

Ditto on Ed's comment

Ed is right on. A couple of additions. Sunbrella is great but dont forget to use the right thread. Your creation will "come appart at the seams" from sun rot in a year or two while the fabric is still ok. Sunbrella has the right stuff in the right colors. Also if you are sailing in salt water, use stanless for the tubing. sailmaker's supply has good prices. Bill Roosa

These guys have an excellent catalog of products, kits and canvaswork "stuff" for sailers. They are GREAT to deal with, and have affordable bimini kits and tons of other things you'll probably be interested in if you're the do-it-yourselfer type.
