We purchased a new boat that has newer equipment than our older boat. The information supplied for maintenance for such things at the shower sump, etc. says to keep them clean, but gives no details on what to use or how to do it. I am very interested in an instruction resource or reference. I have a couple of books on the subject but find them lacking in detail. Does anyone have some good advice to offer? We are not new to boating, but are not the most knowledgeable when it comes to mechanical and electrical repairs and maintenance.

My Choice in Reference Material

Nigel Calders "Boatowners' Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance Manual". All around reference for anything marine related. Available through the store here at this site. Expensive but very comprehensive. Maybe Santa can bring it this X-Mas. Don

Calder is "The Man"

Dec.21, 2000 Dear Mate, I can't endorse Nigel Calder's "Boat Owner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" strongly enough. If you don't already have it, run, don't walk, to your nearest marine book store and buy Nigel Calder's book as recomended by the other two posts. Make sure you get the updated second edition. I can't tell you how often I've referred to it but I feel like I'm on a first name basis with Nigel. The book has saved my bacon when things have failed in some pretty remote corners of the world more than once. If I ever meet the man I'm definitely buying him a beer or three. The only two books I find myself referring to on board ( and I have an enormous number living in several crates) are Nigel Calder's and the actual Perkins engine shop manual. If I could only have one book on board I'd give up the engine manual and keep Nigel's. How's that for an endorsement? For overall cleaning material you can't beat "Simple Green" which is not a soap but an emulsifier for 99% of your cleaning jobs. Mixed in varying strengths you just can't find anything better as a general cleaner. Simple Green is available at most major grocery, department and home improvement stores. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Mate Brian Pickton of BeneteauOwners.net Aboard the Legend, Rodney Bay, St.Lucia

Calder is great

as a second choice I like Ferenc Mate's SHIPSHAPE. It's not anywhere near as comprehensive as Calder's book but it's good and it's a more entertaining read.
