Maintenance Advice

Dear Fellow Vega Owners,

I have a couple of maintenance issues that I could use advice on
solving.

Stuffing box is leaking and I have tried different marine greases but
I get a leak after a couple of hours motoring, 10 hp Penta with combi
prop. I re-pack the box on completion of sailing but is there a
better solution?

I powered out of lee shore storm and ran engine at full throttle for
8 hrs through heavy waves and wind. On powering down, I found that I
had lost forward gear and only had reverse no matter which way I
moved the gear shift. I was able to "juggle" the prop and
managed
forward gear but only at high revolutions and with gear shift all the
way forward. Subsequently the engine slowed down so I cut the fuel
but I believe that the prop is jammed in gear (?). I know that the
info is sketchy but I would like to start a dialogue with someone who
might be able to assist me in trouble shooting the problem.

Thanks,

Hi mate,

I don't pretend to know jack about the COMBI gearbox (Vista had been
converted to a conventional gearbox before I bought her) but I know a
man how does - contact Steve Birch at the UK Vega Association. You'll
find contact info here http://www.firstnet.u-net.com/index.htm.

Good luck, hope your Combi isn't terminal.

Dear Phil,

A leaking stuffing box is a notorious fault in the Vega design.

I replaced my stuffing box by a conventional type and grease it regularly.
\The original construction with simmer rings makes a big dent in the
driving shaft, so that the water from outside can easily pass.

Also I replaced the original shaft with a stainless steel one , already
15 years ago now.

Now the leaking is reasonable.

I have literature about the subject which I could send provided I have your
address.
