A question for the group about how your mainsheet travelers are set up.
We've had our 1971 Vega only one season, and I'm thinking about moving
the travller. It currently runs across the top back edge of the cockpit
well (forward of the lazarette) in a position that when the tiller is
lifted straight up, it strikes the cam cleat mounted on the lower end of
the mainsheet block. This position seems to cause several problems: it
lets the mainsheet fall directly onto the base of the tiller and
occasionally wrap around the tiller post fitting, it makes it difficult
for the mainsheet to be cleated if the tiller is raised high, and it
terribly scratches the beautiful brightwork of the tiller (as it was
when we bought the boat).
Is my traveler now in the "stock" position for a Vega, or might a
previous owner have put it where it is without very good reason? I'm
thinking of moving the traveller to the top of the cockpit coaming
behind the lazarette, if it seems feasible to mount it there. Can
anyone advise on where you have a traveler on your Vega and the pros and
cons of that position? Thanks!
