HI, My question is on the rope clutch, it does not appear to be the best/most effective way to have the main sheet rigged. With a sail that large, it would seem that a clam cleat or something similar would be better. I was hoping that Hunter would have a solution for me, but they suggested that I post something in this forum. The clutch makes it awkward to spill wind in a hurry. Has anybody make modifications to the mainsheet rigging on a 280? All suggestions appreciated Ciaran

Spinlock is making PX Powercleats and you may want to look at this but suggest buying the large one if that is the route to go. You sill need to get the wedge kit in order to angle this unit up for it to work if mounting on the deck. Crazy Dave Condon

Dave, thanks for the info, the Px powercleat looks like it might work nicely. Could I just replace the clutch with the power cleat, what is the wedge and where/why would I need it. Thanks Ciaran

Generally, you will find the area where the rope clutch is attached is handled in two ways for securing. Since I do not have a 280 to look at, let me address it this way. First, is there an access plate underneath in the main salon right below the rope clutch? If there is then you can drill through and put washers on the back. If no access plate underneath the rope clutchm then the screw holes are drilled and tapped as there is a thick aluminum plate that is encapsulated in the fiberglass. Just make sure of the location so you can secure the PX powercleats securly as plain screws into fiberglass alone will eventually back out. As for the wedge to angle this cleat upwards toward the cockpit, it is designed so when pulled down, the powercleat will lock into place. The problem is with the powercleat that isflat with the deck, you have no way to lock it into place without haveing to go right to it and pushing the line down 2-3 inches away from the powercleat. I like to sit in the cockpit and pull on the jib sheet locking it in place without having to go up forward. Placement of the PX Powercleat is crutical. Crazy Dave Condon
