Mainsheet Modification

Looking to attack the next project prior to the coming season. One of my biggest gripes is having to move forward of the pedestal to adjust the main sheet when going solo or when the admiral is below doing whatever it is she does - w/o relying on the autopilot.

It would appear that a lot of the arch-equipped Hunters are rigged similarly to mine - sheet from cabin top to mast base, to boom, to block above traveler, to traveler (on arch), and back to boom.

I would love to have a system that is more or less identical to the traveler rigging in that the control lines come down either side of the arch and are accessable from the helm.

The upside of the arrangement that I have in mind is that the traveler could be adjusted without having to mess with the mainsheet after the fact. Essentially, the sheet would travel through the block on the traveler without affecting its length. Some of the other systems I have seen require a re-tweak of the sheet after the traveler is adjusted.

With the stock system, I've never required more than "arm strength" to adjust the sheet, and I don't believe I would lose any mechanical advantage with the new system over the current arrangement.

I would love some input and feedback from the group as to whether or not this looks feasible before I go out and spend the coin. Rigging aint cheap!

Thanks a ton!

I have attached a diagram of what I have in mind (hopefully it's legible), and look forward to your feedback.

I saw how Hunter has done on the new Hunters what you want to do so check out the new Hunters at a boat show.
I saw them at the Miami sailboat show this past weekend and it looks pretty good for sure but don't know if I am ready to changejust yet, there was a disscussion about the the new system on the newer Hunters on this forum a while back.

Bod, that is exactly how my 326 was setup stock from Hunter factory. I had opt for traveller on the arch. Hence for bid adjustment to Mains, I use mainsheet and minor adjustment I use the traveller. Also the traveller is easily reach from helm when need to spill wind quickly.

Hello,
I have made a modification because I had the same problem. I have described it in Owner modification for Hunter 356. Works very good without interferring with the traveller on the arch. Good luck

Patrik-

Thanks for the information. What you have done would be far easier than what I have planned. The only advantage that I could see with re-rigging the sheet as I have diagramed would be that it would free up one of the clutches on the cabin top that I could utilize to run my vang line back to the cockpit. As it stand now, I have to go forward to adjust the vang.

Thanks again for the input.
