I have been advised to move the mainsheet from the transom to the midle of the cockpit for ease of handling. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or experience of making this modification themselves?

Try the configuration first via Capri 22

If you have an opportunity to do so, I would try and take out a Capri 22 for a sail or two before undertaking this modification. The Capri 22 has the the mainsheet in the middle of the cockpit, rather than on the transom. I find it enough of a hassle there that I have been thinking about moving it to the transom. I think that the hassles I really dislike are 1) that it is something that is just at the right level to trip over, 2) it divides the cockpit into two sections so that moving from one end to the other is not an easy process, 3) I like when moving around in the cockpit to keep my eye on the boom ( at 6'2" it swings a bit too low for my tastes but thats another story, and the boomkicker I just bought may help with that) and so with the mainsheet and traveler track bisecting the cockpit I need to also watch out for them at the same time, 4) to the extent that sailing is potentially a social activity, it tends to create a definite division of the cockpit into the stern section with me behind the mainsheet handling the tiller and sheets,etc... and my wife and guests on the other side essentially socializing. I don't intend this is as a criticism of my wife's sailing behavior, but rather a comment on the subtle impact of dividing the cockpit into a "controls" section and a "social" section. Its the same if she is at the controls and I am on the other side of the mainsheet traveler. On the upside, if you take it to the point of imitating the control setup of a Capri 22 (particularly with the racing package, it makes it very easy to sail singlehanded with all the controls and lines, etc. in front of you or beside you. I guess that in conclusion the location of the mainsheet has been one of the primary considerations in my mind that has made me contemplate trading our Capri 22 for a Catalina 22. Let me add here that I do not race so having "inherited" from a former client a racing sailboat perhaps is a underlying bit of conflict. If you end up liking it on a Capri 22 then I would go ahead on making the changes, and try to imitate the configuration on the Capri 22, including adding whatever winches, etc that you need, along with the traveler system. If you don't like it, then you have not lost anything in the process. I will be interested in your reaction and what you end up doing. Good luck! George

C-18 mainsheet mounting

That's something I'm planning on dealing with this winter: changing the lower mainsheet attachment point to something that's a bit more adjustable and nearer the centerline. I immediately discounted the cockpit-mounted traveler location, as one of the C-18's best features is its large, open cockpit. I am planning on doing something similar to the C-22 setup: a transom-mounted short length traveler. It would mount above the tiller using tall cross-section traveler track and spacer blocks or short stanchions to lift it above the tiller. Any ideas? Also, check out the Catalina 18 Natl. Assn. website at: www.catalina18.com There's a link on it to my Capri 18 website, too.

Boomkicker

The latest issue of Mainsheet magazine (Nov. '00) has a tech article on the installation of a Boomkicker on a Capri 18. Check it out. I installed a Boomkicker on my C-18, and it works very well.
