Hi,

I´m in the process to replace my main sail. I have to quotation, one from North Sails and the other from Doyle.

The Doyle sail has this specs:
Blue Water Ocean Plus Main Material: 9.77 Marblehead

And the North Sails says:
High Roach Mainsail NPC Cross-Cut NorDac ND82HA

My boat is the Hunter Legend 430 (43 foot)

Any advice ? Recommendation?

When considering a mainsail (before Covid and my repower project) I visited with both of the sailmakers you mentioned.

Doyle said they had a computer model of the sail plan and based on that gave me a quote.

The North Sail manager looked up my boat and said there were 120 of your boat built. I need to see and measure your boat before I can give you a quote.

I selected North Sail to build my Main. I have been very pleased with the selection. Working with the manager and the local loft has been a great experience. The prices were very similar.

I'm sure both are reputable sailmakers, years ago I went with North Sails. They came out to measure and I am Very pleased with results, they even sent Charlie Enright (winner of Volvo Ocean Race) to show me proper use of sail and to win a Wednesday night beer can race. Forever winning my endorsement and I continue to buy their sails.

I have an older boat (1988 O’Day 322) and I had some questions about battens, etc. North came out and measured (I am in the Chicago area and they have a loft in Chicago). They made some suggestions, which I went with (Tides Marine String Track to go with full battens).

But maybe the most important thing to me was that I felt that the sail was a few inches too tall, or the headboard was too big…for some reason the headboard caught on my topping lift when tacking. I used it that season, but emailed my local loft about the issue. The next winter, I took the sail in, and they modified the sail and installed a different headboard. In short, they made it right.

I went back to them for a new jib, and again got some local knowledge (went from a155 to a 135). I am happy with the smaller sail, and the service from North Sail.

Ino lofts near me in Central WI. But I bought from Precision Sails a couple years back for my O'Day 25. They sent instructions on how to measure both my rig and the old main sail, I followed the instructions, and the sail turned out pretty great. I'd not hesitate to use them again
