Mainsail vs. spreaders

Help! Am I missing something? Out on close to a beam-reach, not even on a run and the spreaders and shrouds are pressing on the sail. Is this normal on a 216? Seems to me that the sail is taking an undo beating. Any ideas? Thanks, people.

Baggy wrinkle

Or PVC with your rubbers over your the tips of your spreaders. Then you should be alright. You are normally better off to tack going dead downwind anyway, for a bunch of reasons. You are faster for one and less dangerous to keep the wind on a designated side. Plus you can balance better and keep you jib in play. Yes many yachts are rigged like this

Flatten that main.

Don't know about your boat but the larger Hunters with the swept back spreaders suffer from this. The use of a voom bang will help keep the sail flat.

boom vang

I also experience this. Its probably partly the swept back spreaders design as mentioned. I also probably don't tighten the boom vang enough when reaching and running.

Spreader patches

After a while you'll see the wear patterns your sailing makes on the sail material and you can then add spreader wear patches in the areas that need it. Unfortunaly I've not done enought sailing in the last 7 years to need them on my newest sail,b ut I will someday because it has swept back spreaders like yours.

Thanks

Thanks everybody! Yeah, I guess I need for beginners to flatten the main. Haven't paid much attention to sail shape or the vang til now, only to make sure that it's loose when hoisting sail. Stupid!
