Mainsail size

I recently ordered a new mainsail from a reputable sailmaker in Maine and it arrived almost 2' too long on the luff (too long for the mast). I am in the process of removing the mast to measure the length but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the sail changing sizes over the years. I sail a 1965 which has the mast located fore of the cuddy. On more recent models the mast sits on top of the cuddy and that's all I can think of that might answer this measurement mystery. Any guesses?

Measurement.

I am Surprised that the sailmaker would even consider building a sail without the proper rig dimensions. The sailmakers around here will come out and measure the rig themselves. Now they will need to cut down the sail or re-build it completely depending on what options you ordered it with: cunningham, Flattener, Battens, ect. will all be affected.

Rod Johnson,

Day Sailer? or Rhodes 19?

The Day Sailer never has had the mast stepped forward of the cuddy, so I have a feeling that you have a Rhodes 19. The O'Day Built R19 had the mast stepped through the deck forward of the cuddy, the newer Stuart-built R19 has the cuddy moved forward to create a larger cockpit and so the mast goes through the cuddy like a DS. Now, that still doesn't explain the sail being too big and I'm not aware of any change to the R19 mainsail since 1965, so your sailmaker goofed! He should fix it at no charge.
