Mainsail rigging - 17'

I am a bluewater sailer who just purchased my first daysailer, an older 17' O'Day (probably 1973). I have no paperwork with the boat and do not know the model but Javelin popped up in the window when I began this article; it may not be correct.I have not rigged the boat yet and am curious if the mainsail is supposed to have no slides. It appears that it mounts with a bolt rope. The mast and sails are in such good condition that they are probably replacements. Is a bolt rope the method that the mainsail was always hanked on the mast on an older model O'Day Daysailer?Malcolm

you must have a daysailor, and a small 'cuddy' forward, the javelin is 14' and no real under deck space to crawl into. most all i have seen have boltrope mains, but many of us have converted to slug for ease.

I have two sets of sails, one bolt rope and one with slugs. I usally use the one with slugs because they are newer but it is also easier to raise.

There are several differences between the DSI and DSII, that pretty much hold for all manufacturers of the DSI. The easiest to notice is the thwart across the middle of the boat at the centerboard trunk. This thwart exists only in the DSI. Next is the way the centerboard is manuevered. In the DSI there is a handle and in the DSII there is a rope running out of the bottom of the cuddy.I have a 1974 DSII, and numerous pictures of repair and restoration, if you need any assistance with information.

Daysailers in NH

Malcolm, I have a '72 Daysailer 2, and mine uses a bolt rope also. I only just bought mine last year and spent last sailing season repairing holes, rigging, locating sails, and trying to learn as much as I can about the boat. I am ready to put it in the water anyday now, can'twait. Where's Goose Pond? Doesn't sound like any place near me. If I can figure out how to sail it maybe we can get together and race 'em.
